10 Must-Haves for Optimal Health while Traveling

Optimal health on the road = Optimal travel experience!

We all want to arrive in good health, so we can dive deep into our adventures.

I have definitely been unwell while traveling, and while I have lived to tell the tale, my protocol these days is much more about prevention!

Like you, I would much rather stay healthy, happy and in great physical shape on the road! When I look back at the times I, or my family were super sick away from home, I know that if I had this must-have list of items, our experience would have been very different!

Keep reading to learn what my ten essential remedies, supplements and practices are. I hope you find it helpful!

Apotheke in the hotel room! The line up is long but the benefits are bountiful!

After 38 hours of travel, my eyes get so dry and red. Coconut oil to the rescue!

The Top Ten Products, Pills and Practices

GLUTAPAK
Glutapak-R contains a hefty dose of glutamine, along with Lactobacillus Reuteri.
Glutamine is an amino acid that is essential for repairing and maintaining the gut wall. As 70-80% of our immune system resides in the gut aka our intestines, keeping her VERY happy is important.

This is THE best thing for diarrhea, so don’t leave home without several of these super-powered sachets!

IMMUNITY BOOST by REVIVE
Have you heard of Thieves oil by Young Living? Or OnGuard by DoTerra? Immunity Boost by Revive is their twin sister, without the price tag.
An effective blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils blasts away bugs, supports the immune system and doubles as a key ingredient to healthy hand-sanitizer and air-purifier.
I mix 3 drops on a spoon with honey, once daily.
GOLDENSEAL
One of nature’s most precious gifts, goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antimicrobial.

My family and I use it any time we feel like we are getting sick (post-nasal drip, sore throat etc), or when we get sick with a cough or cold.

Always exercise caution and speak with your primary healthcare professional to make sure you don’t have any condition that would contraindicate Goldenseal use. Remember, anything with the power to heal, has the power to harm, so be smart about your health.
I love HawaiiPharm products the most.

ZINC

Making sure I give my immune system the support is needs, zinc is a must. See my post with more info about zinc here.                          In a nutshell, zinc is essential for optimal immune function. I don’t leave home without it!

My favourite zinc product is Zinc Glycinate Chelate by Smoky Mountain Nutrition, however they currently don’t have stock.

In the meantime, see Thorne’s Zinc BiGlycinate 30mg in the link below.

I like that they have three bioavailable forms (zinc gluconate, zinc glycinate chelate and zinc oxide)

YOUR WHOLE IMMUNE PROTOCOL!

I am cheating here, because I needed space for one more essential product. So here, I will just say, be sure to pack whatever immune support protocol you have. Vitamins C and D should be part of it for sure!

FUZZY NECK WARMER

I felt ridiculous packing my snowboarding fuzzy, soft neck warmer, but I could not be happier that I did!!

It can be used to cover your eyes if needed, but I was chilly from the cold AC, and we definitely want to keep warm so as to not stress out our body and let our defenses down!

MY SARONG

‘A sarong?’, you ask! Yes- and here is why. I cannot live without my sarong on flights longer than a few hours. If I am sleeping, my sarong is used to make a little tent over me. This filters the lights when they blast on just as you are finally getting comfy!

These days of COVID travel bring new challenges to the existing challenges such as sleeping on a plane!

How do we sleep with our mask on, what if it comes off? Well, draping a sarong over us gives a little leeway and extra protection in such a circumstance! Sleep is SO important, so every little trick helps.

SPIRULINA

When we travel someplace where we may be challenged to find enough green foods, spirulina comes with us. Also, to satisfy our vitamin A needs, without the risk of overdose, spirulina is a rich source of betacarotene. Betacarotene converts to vitamin A as needed, by the body.

My favorite spirulina source is Zazzee Naturals. Click the link below to find it on Amazon. (I prefer to buy direct from the brand, however in this case, Zazzee only sell via Amazon)

COCONUT OIL

From soothing dried out eyes and nourishing our skin, to providing a rich source of beneficial fats, coconut oil comes with us everywhere!

I found a little travel pack to fill with whatever liquids we deem necessary, and the coconut oil filled the pump bottle plus another one to be sure!

I don’t have any special feelings about which brand of coconut oil to use, but cold-pressed, organic and preferably local is the way to go if possible.

HUMIDIFLYER MASK

We purchased these after reading Melissa Ambrosini’s awesome tips for travel. The purpose is to humidify the air we breathe so that we don’t get as dried out on longer flights.

With ours, I spray the little sponge filter with essential oil diluted in water, and shaken well (see above for Revive’s Immunity Boost) which gives a nice smell but also some protection against germs too. It works for us!

Note that airlines don’t allow these types of masks as they are vented. Our solution is to put our regular bamboo cloth masks over the HumidiFlyer.
